Jesus Ali Index Book Projects As the current focus of my Graduate research, I am investigating the connective and contradictive relationships created between photographed subjects when presented in the “Index” format. This format has historically been employed by such artists as Ed Ruscha and Bernd & Hilla Becher to unromantically present a group of similar subjects. Through the Index format, patterns, attributes (and the relationships between them), that would otherwise remain subconscious, are brought to the visual and conceptual fore. An Index serves as a, “broad cross section.” A median average. I maintain, that within this average one can find Truth. To this end, I seek to employ to the Index format to analyze my life, goals and perceptions through a series of “archetypal” photo books of varying titles. These titles/subjects as presented here:
